Magnificent Thanks to all the players, parents and friends who helped Brother John at Sunday’s tournament. He was most enthused about all the positive energy and support the kids received throughout the day. Everyone did a great job! —Renee M Scorcia, President
So far no safety guidelines for indoor chess tournaments have been issued for New York. Riverbank State Park is not possible for November or +December. As soon as possible The Right Move will hold indoor tournaments at Riverbank, but now Prepare for the outdoors on November 8 at Roberto Clemente State Park*.
Sign up for this 4 games of exciting chess now. It’s free. (4 SS, G/30;d5) USCF membership required. To join or renew USCF on-site costs $9 for the entire year.
Send an email to brjohn@juno.com with your name, uscf id and your section. Tell NEW if joining for the first time. There are no team awards due to the limited number of players (48).
There are really three separate tournaments, called sections. New players and beginners can choose the Under 600 section (Rook). There is a section for Under 1000 (Queen) and another for those Over 1000 (King). You only play against those in your section.
Games are at 10:00, 11:00, 12:30 and 1:30. Trophies to top 3 in each section, top U1200, top U700, with medals for a finish of 2.5 or better. Sign up on-site allowed on a first- come basis until 48 is reached, so do pre-register to hold your place.
Farewell tour: Many thanks to The Scorcia Family (Renee, Yvonne, Marilyn and Henry) They are finishing 10 years of volunteer work helping maintain the high professional level of tournament conditions demanded by our youth. Please be prepared to step forward and help out in November as they will not be present due to other obligations. Tell Brother John you are willing to help. Keep the tradition of Free Chess for Youth alive.
- Riverbank State Park is located at 145th Street and Riverside Drive in NYC 10024. Roberto Clemente State Park is located at 301 West Tremont Ave., Bronx 10453.
The Chess Indoor Plan from The Right Move for use when Riverbank State Park might become available (projected January??):
Round pairings would be posted outside the building 10 minutes prior to the round.
Only those playing would be allowed in the tournament hall, limited to a total of 48 players.
There will be only two players at each table. Tables would be spaced a minimum 6 feet apart from each other. Players would be required to wear a mask and sanitize hands before each game.
Each round a sanitized set and board would be used and the previous equipment will be removed from play.
