Welcome – help in planning starts here

Our Planning Board Meeting is open to all, and your voice is important for the quality and improvement of our FREE Scholastic Chess Tournaments.  These meetings  take place every tournament for fifteen minutes after the trophy presentation, from approximately 3:30 to 3:45. (Most recent are placed on top of former meetings.)  Latest Summaries occur on top:  Official Notice of Next Meeting:

January 13, 2019 3:45 PM at Roberto Clemente State Park

Date: 12/2/2018    4:00- 4:45 PM Roberto Clemente State Park.

Minutes of the Corporation of the Board of The Right Move for New York City

Present: Renee M Scorcia, Marilyn Scorcia, Yvonne M Scorcia, Brother John McManus, Henry Scorcia; Excused: Alex Beasley, Eliot Weiss, John Doherty

Old Business:

  • Many volunteers contribute their time and talents with set-up and very many other assorted tasks throughout the day.  Your help and magical kindnesses are deeply appreciated.
  • Check-in still presents a problem with many names not properly on the list that is on the website, www.chesstrm.org/NYC  All persons must check the website chesstrm.org/NYC/ with the understanding that the tournament depends on all making sure the list is correct, and then being on time for check-in. If you are late you must begin play in round two.
  • If you are not a member of USCF and wish to join Operation Reach Out ($9/yearly membership in USCF) you must see Brother John. This applies specially to expired memberships who wish $9 Operation Reach Out.
  • The tournament hall is an open space and noise between rounds must be kept to a minimum. With the cold and unpredictable weather outdoor activity must be somewhat curtailed. We will revert to a quicker time schedule with the intent of limiting down time between games since so many people are confined to this indoor space. New : 10:00, 11:15, 12:30, 1:45.  (Old  10:00, 11:30, 1:00, 2:15.)

Reports:

  • Three persons paid the $5 fee for being checked in automatically and can just check the box at registration all year long and then just show up for their game on time.
  • Nine persons joined/renewed the USCF bringing our total below the 75 target line (total for 3 months) for Operation Reach 150. Our goal is 25 per month.
  • Seven persons joined the USCF section incorrectly causing much damage to the processing of reports from The Right Move. If you are not a member of the USCF you can not play in a rated section.  The USCF will not rate the entire tournament unless all players are current members.  This confusion may last several days or even weeks until the issue(s) is resolved.

New Business:

Motion:

  1. The Right Move will spend less time between rounds due to the poor weather conditions and the limited space and noise in the tournament hall. Rounds will be at 10:00, 11:15, 12:30, 1:45. Approved by voice vote
  2. The Right Move will send out the confirmation notification (See  Ammendment A) clarifying rules for late arrivals. .  Approved by voice vote

Nov. 4, 2018 at Roberto Clemente State Park:

Minutes of the Corporation of the Board of The Right Move for New York City

Present: Brother John McManus, Renee M Scorcia, Marilyn Scorcia, Yvonne Scorcia, Henry Scorcia; Excused- Alejandro B, John Doherty, Eliot Weiss

Old Business:

  • Parking passes provided by the Park were used effectively and no parking on the circle was observed. Thanks all.  Remember to advise all drivers that they are not allowed to park on the circle.
  • Progress at Riverbank State Park makes the new projected date for tournaments to return to Manhattan might be as early as March. The Right Move is most enthusiastic and energized in our temporary “home” at Roberto Clemente State Park.
  • The charcoal grill can be used for cooking, as our first successful ‘hot dog cook outing’ proved on Sunday. The staff of Roberto Clemente State Park were most helpful in contributing to this success story.
  • The June trophies were again available for pick up and those not claimed will be put aside for future use. Thanks to those who were forced to wait to pick them up.  Your gentleness throughout this period had been extraordinary.
  • The level of noise in the tournament hall has become a problem, particularly in the later rounds. Respect for those finishing games (especially around 1:45 – 2:00) does not allow the necessary quiet for championship play. Go outside to celebrate, talk, or just work off energy. It is not fair to destroy all the good work by forgetting to respect those still playing. Staff alone can’t handle this!  The limitations of space require all to help keep indoors quiet until all games finish.

Reports:

  1. The response to our “Reach Out 150” campaign to bring new members into supporting the USCF exceeded our 25 goal for November. We had 27 paid members join or renew.  Keep it up!
  2. Expired memberships are not allowed to play in USCF tournaments. The “Reach Out 150” campaign of The Right Move attempts to assist players by making the yearly fee $9.   (Any expired memberships will be allowed so see Brother John to show proof of membership or to pay the renewal fee.  Only after that will they be placed into sections.  Expired memberships  are not allowed to play until renewed. This has almost become a problem so it ends here and now.)
  3. Several players were given a yearly USCF membership by The Right Move so that the November tournament could be rated by USCF in a timely fashion. Payment of the $9 fee to The Right Move  will allow them to participate in future tournaments of The Right Move.
  4. The ‘lost parent’ and ‘missing items’ area is located near the computer desk.
  5. If your name is not on the list published on the Website to play in The Right Move tournament you must see Brother John. He will assign you to a section, and you will probably miss the first game.  No exceptions.   Please continue to allow the check-in staff to do their job timely & well.

New Business:

Preparations are being made to establish an end-of-the-year picnic honoring chessplayers at Roberto Clemente State Park during the third week in June.  A brochure will be prepared.  Free hot dogs, hamburgers and ice cream will be available for all.  People may choose to bring other food items to share. A seven round non-rated blitz tournament might be offered.  Recognition for players and coaches could be presented in a relaxed setting. Is the staff doing all this?  Of course not!  Everyone must get involved to make this work.  (This has been an established custom from the Albany Chapter of The Right Move, dating since 2004, precisely because they have facility to run such an event.)  Now this opportunity arises in the Bronx precisely because Roberto Clemente State Park has such tremendous resources (Picnic grounds, benches, etc.)  Step up now.  Who will lead?  No response = no picnic.

The non-rated beginner’s section is not intended to be for players with experience.  New players are meant to be encouraged by joining the beginner’s section. Players who win a trophy in the beginners’ section are no longer considered ‘beginners’.  It is not fair to true beginners that they meet players who have lots of tournament experience. Trophy winners should join the uscf and play in a rated section against players of equal ability. Players start as non-rated and establish a rating playing against other rated players. .  The only reason The Right Move can do a 4-round tournament in one day is because of the USCF, and the programs on computer they helped develop  that aid our print-outs, pairing sheets and the rest.

The New York City Kasparov Scholastic Championships are being held at the Brooklyn Marriot on Jan 5-6. Good luck to all those players and teams hoping to become the next NYC Champions.  Sign up early and save $$$.  This is not a feature of The Right Move. It is not free.  Please go through CCA for entry into that event.

Don’t forget to give a nod to Fabricio Caruano and Magnus Carlson, our World Championship players. (Nov 9-28, 2018 in London.)

A final word of gratitude goes to our players, friends and volunteers.  Your cooperation in signing up, being on time for games and reporting results does make the day run smoothly and well.

Don’t forget. We have magnificent volunteers who continue to impress!  Thank you to so very many nameless people who accomplish many things in the blink of an eye, making chess so very possible and enjoyable.

October 21, 2018 at Roberto Clemente State Park:

Minutes of the Corporation of the Board of The Right Move for New York City

Attendance:  Brother John McManus, Yvonne M. Scorcia, Marilyn C. Scorcia, Renée M. Scorcia, Henry J. Scorcia, Eliot Weiss (excused), Alex Beasley (excused)

Old Business:

Great big buckets of gratitude to all who volunteered, especially :  Carl Aridas and Nagareja Aeturi.  Your smiles amid all the hustle and bustle were terrific rewards for all to see.

Thank you to Carlos Luna and his family.  They provided fresh,  free hot dogs for all to enjoy!  Yes, that was very refreshing and thoughtful!

John Doherty and his staff were most helpful throughout the day, especially with the free parking passes that John was able to hand out.  Space is very limited so do not expect too much as conditions may change from time to time.

The tables and chairs will be combined into half the gym, putting the tournament section into a smaller area that will be marked out for players only.  Great quiet must be kept in the playing hall (all areas inside). Please use the area outside the gymnasium outside the green door for running, playing ball, etc. Continue to be on time for all games. (King and Queen sections will be in the classroom apart from the gym.  Pairings will be posted inside the room for these sections.)

We are most grateful to those champions from June who were able to pick up their June trophies on Oct 14 during the Blitz tournament and again on Oct 21 here at the State Park.  After Nov 4 we will no longer have them available for pick up.

Attendance at The Right Move is expected to grow in the coming months, so please keep being thoughtful and considerate for all. Report any problems or concerns quickly so as to resolve any situation. With the help of all making The Right Move(s) grand success and much happiness follows.

Reports:

  • Due to the numbers of players in several sections it was necessary on Oct 21 to regroup players to provide games for their sections.  The King and Queen sections had to be combined to get at least 12 people in each section. The lower section that has to play against higher rated players then need one less point to qualify for medals. When the Pawn section combined with the Bishop section 1.5 points becomes the new norm for a medal for the pawn section, since they were playing above their level.  The top 2 pawn players should still receive trophies. When there are less than 12 players in a section only two trophies are awarded.
  • 11 people participated in Operation “Reach Out 150” to get 150 youth to join/renew uscf membership @ $9/year. (Our stated goal is 25 per month.) Quick Math 11/25 = 44% We did not reach our goal for October.
  • Thanks to those who contributed $26.00 in donations and pencil sales
  • 2 more players joined the pre-check-in list to avoid standing in the check-in line. This $5 is refundable and lasts all year at The Right Move tournaments, or until forfeited by failure to show up.

New Business:

We need your help.  We have purchased 300 memberships for the uscf so that we could lower the price for membership.  Our drive, titled  “Reach Out 150” urges all to get more players to benefit from the joys of chess.  Join with The Right Move as we begin operation “Reach Out” in a membership drive to support the USCF.  Our goal is to encourage 25 chess players to join or renew their membership each month. This reduced rate of $9.00 for the entire year is a tremendous saving and makes it possible for more to enjoy chess more fully.

The pictures taken and posted on the web from Oct 21 shows the real hard work done by all.  Keep it up, all.  Really good to see.  More creative work to come from our talented staff and friends.  Keep challenging us to improve.

Work on repairs to Riverbank State Park is progressing rapidly.  When we have more information we will let send out emails through mailchimp, our faithful companion, to keep you informed as well.

Thanks to all who made Sunday Oct. 21 so outrageously  outstanding.  It is a magnificent tribute to all our players, friends, and all dedicated to seeing youth grow through chess. Thank you to all our volunteers, most of whom choose to remain nameless. (We thank the two who signed up as Volunteers on the Registration list.  Simply report to Marilyn for assignment from 9:00 -12:00 or 12:00 – 2:30.)

·         There are currently only 6 tournaments scheduled for the coming 2016 – 2017 scholastic year due to lack of financial support. Suggestions: a) The idea of giving out paper certificate instead of trophy for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners was suggested. Student Representative stated it is not a good idea because kids want trophies to display not paper certificates. It was decided that trophies and medals will remain the same for all sections. This being approved, it means that if we do not receive any more donations, then only6 tournaments next year beginning in October 2016.·         Need more volunteers to spread the word about getting donations and the decreased number of tournaments for next year.·         b) Trophies that are not customized was another idea posed. If there are uncollected trophies from prior tournaments, Eliot suggested just changing the name plaque and using them for tournaments next year.·  No conclusion at this time.        Volunteers are needed at Riverbank Park as early as 8:00 am in order to help Brother John set up. Due to the new  parking situation, Brother John has to drop off everything, go park his car and then set up in the gym which takes roughly 30 minutes. So if you are able to come in early, please volunteer. The earlier we set up and smoother the day is so all will begin and start on time.·         Training is very important for both the computer and the floor people. Need people to be trained in case of someone not being able to attend a tournament.·         NYS Scholastic Chess Championships to be held in Saratoga Springs, NY will be March 11 and 12. There will also be an Albany tournament in Siena College April 2-3.      The Champions  new Adult Rated Sections went well with 4 entries and an EF of !0$ for 2 rated games.  It concluedes in March.  Try new Pawnpushers section in April open to adults, including non-members,  $10 for three games at G/45;d5 with 1/2 EF as prize for first.

December 6, 2015 Meeting of Corporation of the Board of The Right Move at Riverbank, New York, NY

Attendance: Brother John McManus    Eliot Weiss   Henry J. Scorcia         Marilyn C. Scorcia    Yvonne M. Scorcia      Renee M. Scorcia                      Analeah Collazo     Maria Collazo    (posted Dec. 21, 2015)

Meeting called to order at 3:30 pm

Old Business:

  • Minutes from November 8 accepted
  • Everything  posted on the website and appears up to date
  • Discussion was held regarding the attendance of Officers at monthly meetings. Our Secretary, Oliver Bravo, has been in contact with Brother John.  Our President, Ganesh Rao will propose the tentative 2016 – 2017 scholastic schedule at the January 2016 meeting.  If Officers are not able to do the job, then new Officers must be nominated and/or appointed.  (to be continued…)
  • We have received $200 from Jay Wood for sponsorship and $200 from the family of Aidan Evans, as well as $100 from the family of Josh Blaustein. Letters of appreciation have been sent. We have not heard from Gregory (he said he wants to sponsor 3 tournaments) so right now the proposed schedule for 2016 – 2017 is as follows:
  • Oct 9 TRM 217  –  Kellerman Family
  • Nov 6 TRM 218  –  Wood Family
  • Dec 4TRM 219  –  Evans Family
  • Jan 8 TRM 220  –  Nozaki Family
  • Feb 5 TRM 221  –  Blaustein Family
  • Mar 5 TRM 222  –  cancelled
  • Apr 2 TRM 223  –   cancelled
  • May 7 TRM 224  –   cancelled
  • Jun 4 TRM 225  –   cancelled
  • The Mail chimp campaign was effective. Henry’s draft of letter soliciting funds was positively received.
  • We currently have enough in our account to pay insurance ($2000) due in February 2016. After payment of the insurance the funds will be wiped out unless we receive donations.
  • The account for updating our charter needs $1500 to complete the renewal. But this is not possible at this time due to the lack of donations.

·         Make The Right Move, www.chesstrm.org our Albany component, has set the goal of $400 per tournament.  They are doing this by getting two sponsors for each tournament.  Thanks to Sreenivas Alampalli for moving ahead with this. There are currently 14 tournaments emanating from Albany.  ·         The goal for Albany is currently $5000 to pay all expenses (trophies, medals, TLA, rating fees, internet and all related chess matters like Charter from USCF).  No one receives any payment in NYC or Albany for all services rendered. Last year expenses exceeded $9000 for both NYC and Albany.  The efforts to get donations must be increased for NYC.  Be more aggressive.

Reports:

  • 2 new & 3 renewal memberships to USCF and 2 pre-registration payments
  • Received $ 160.00 in donations

New Business:

·         Jay Wood suggested more aggressive campaign by posting direct signage: “Would you be willing to support The Right Move?  We can get to our goal ($4000) with enough $20, $40 or whatever financial help is possible!  Yes, we can!”  Vote taken and it was approved.·         Had discussion on whether or not a $100 prize should be available for the winner of the Open Section?  A possible donor stands by to donate this incentive as a way to get better players to enter our Open section.  Vote was taken and the result was a unanimous no.  Brother John suggested that prize money might be awarded to a player or someone who supports other players.  Support can be in the form of instruction, going over the game and discuss better options, etc.·         Motion was made to replace the Unrated Beginner Section grades 6 – 12 with splitting it into two sections: grades 2 and 3 and grades 4 – 7. Those in upper grades can join USCF ($9 voucher).  If passed by voice vote, it will go into effect on our next tournament.  It was unanimously passed.  Therefore, beginning in January 2016 the Unrated Beginner sections will be Grades 2 – 3 and Grades 4 – 7.  If USCF rated players are permitted to play in beginner section, they may earn medals but not trophies. ·         Information is being gathered for contenders for the New York City Scholastic Championships (http://www.gnyscc.com/sections.html) held at the Brooklyn Marriot on Jan 8-10 as they are considered for “Chess Free Entry” as guests of The Right Move.  (Free entry is made possible by donation of time as TD by Brother John at the Tournament).  Information needed is players name, address, grade, school, birthdate and email or phone for each one.  Updated USCF memberships through at least 1/31/16.  Correct section for each player using January ratings.·         The Secretary will forward emails to all the necessary parties so all are kept in the loop, even though they cannot attend our meeting.  Yvonne M. Scorcia has stepped forward to become an Assistant Secretary.  Will send a list of people who should be included in these emails to Brother John.Motions:·         If any player will be leaving at any time during the tournament, the player must notify (tell) the computer person and/or the TD working their section.  The imposing a $5.00 penalty for rated sections, if rated player leaves without notifying the TD or computer person before the pairings are posted, was passed by voice vote.

  • Motion to adjourn the meeting made by Renee M. Scorcia and 2nd by Henry J. Scorcia. Meeting adjourned at 3:50 pm        -Submitted by Marilyn C. Scorcia

Attendance:   Brother John McManus    Eliot Weiss   Henry J. Scorcia       Marilyn C. Scorcia    Yvonne M. Scorcia      Renee M. Scorcia  Alex Beasley     Ganesh Rao    Tejal Mehta     Bodri Doraiswany   Analeah Collazo

Meeting called to order at 3:20 pm

Old Business:

  • Minutes from October 4 accepted.
  • Tournament rated by USCF & posted on web with results for all to see.
  • There are many tournaments throughout the area.  Attendance is low at TRM.
  • The notice that there may be only 2 tournaments next year due to lack of finances has been posted.  Only one donor has stepped forward and the calendar for next scholastic year is planned in January.
  • All workers are volunteers at our tournaments. Join us. Share the workload. See Marilyn to find out how you can get involved and make more enjoyment for all.

Reports:

  • The voucher program is well received, with 15 new & 7 renewal memberships to USCF costing only $9, a tremendous saving to you chessplayers.  (The Right Move has purchased 300 paid in advance memberships to make this possible.)
  • Received $ 76.00 in donations
  • The cost for trophies and medals through June 2016 has been completed.  Next big payment is insurance for $2000 due in February.

New Business:

  • There are too few players to run the Beginner Grades 6-12 section, with only about 5-6 players showing up.  Players may have to join USCF ($9) unless more begin to participate.
  • In October total contributions was $255.00. For November totals now come to $116.
  • The last few years Brother John has been able to donate about $3500 each year to keep Fred Goldhirsh’ dream alive. That is not the best plan since this is no longer possible. The necessary goal for this year is $4,000.00 to cover all expenses. (Last Year’s goal of $2000 fell short.  Sponsors and donations contributed only $1556.
  • Greg has stepped forward saying he plans to sponsor 3 tournaments. He also wants to provide a “stimulus prize” of $100 to the winner of the Open section.  Stay tuned for details. Brother John suggested instead to give money to the higher point player(s) based on the individual totals section posted on the web. (cumulative points for certain number of months)
  • Make the Right Move, the Albany Chapter formed in 2004,  has developed staff with 3 tournament directors to serve at tournaments responding to needs. All their staff are likewise unpaid professionals donating their time and services. In addition, they have raised $1600 so far this year and have set a goal of $5,000 so they can have 14 tournaments.  The President is a 9th grader who posts the notices on Mailchimp while another person completely handles registration on the Website. Visit their website at chesstrm.org and especially notice the fine pictures posted.

Motion:

  • Motion to adjourn the meeting made by Ganesh Rao and 2nd by Brother John. Meeting adjourned at 3:35 pm
  • A decision to post the notice regarding financial proposal (only two tournaments unless finances can be found) was approved by voice vote.

Meeting called to order at 3:45 pm
Old Business:
To date the expenditures are $2,762 and the budget is $4,000.00. Donation Oct. 4 $5. Goal is $4000 for 9 tournaments next year.  It is a shared mission of all to find sponsors to continue “Free Chess for Youth”, Fred Goldhirsch’ dream

The lists posted on the web are transparent.  A phone number is listed to contact Brother John who operates the website.  Parents/guardians/coaches must help assure the listings are correct by signing up in plently of time and then correcting mistakes as long before the event as possible. Every registrant is listed on the web site by hand, not by any machine. Some listings repeat when parent and coach sign students up in different sections. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian/coach to make sure the list is correct before the tournament. Avoid confusion and notify Brother John immediately of any errors.

Our new season brought new opportunities needing new expertise.  Officers from last year were on hand to provide much needed support and continue the tradition of professional chess for our young competitors… Looking for responsible people willing to share their time and energy in a noble cause without any pay except knowing your time, work and enthusiasm is priceless!
Need volunteers from 8:00-10:00 for set up. Need volunteers to collect results for each of four rounds from 10:00-3:00.  Need volunteers from 2:30-3:30 to take down chairs and tables, collect and store equipment.  That volunteer could be you!  To Sign up – see Marilyn.
New Business:
Winners of each section will (hopefully) win entry into the NYC Championship at the Brooklyn Marriott. The list will be posted on the website. Sections with perfect scores will determine the winner by 5-minute Blitz playoff games until a championship is won. Sectiions with ties without perfect (unbeaten) scores will use ordinary tie-break methods posted at the tournament.
Please note: The January 2016 tournament will be held on January 17, 2016. The change has been posted on the website. New brochures are available that lists the tournaments. Please use these booklets to recruit sponsors for next season. We are hoping 20 people (stores, schools. families) will donate $200 each so we can reach our goal of $4000.

Since USCF implemented the 5-second delay rule chess has been dramatically changed. Chess is much more exciting as players fight the clock with more chances of a draw. Responding to this change a sponsor has helped The Right Move upgrade clocks to provide 5-second delay.  Initial results are good but small unpaid staff works much harder so that players can meet what must become their own responsibility.
Miscellaneous:
Need improvement Points: we have too few staff with too many jobs leading to a super overworked staff;  more volunteers are needed.  The new officers appointed in June must assume more responsibility.
Positive observations: staff is gracious and they do all possible for the players, parents and coaches.
Motion:
Motion to adjourn the meeting made by Renee Scorcia and 2nd by Yvonne Scorcia. Meeting adjourned at 4:05 pm

Great big Thank you to all who volunteered on October 4, 2015

Notice of Board of Director Yearly Meeting – June 7 at 4:00 at Riverbank State Park.

The Right Move Chess Foundation Board met at Riverbank State Park on Sunday, June 7, 2015 for the Annual Board Meeting.  We reviewed and approved  the work of the Committees of the Corporation for Albany and New York City. We reviewed the budget and the work of the Finance Committee.  We approved the tentative calendars for tournaments in each area and expressed much admiration and commendations to the many volunteers who all contribute services freely.

We intend to continue using our website www.therightmove.org and www.chesstrm.org to publish and advertise, keeping our costs at a minimum.  We also intend to offer 300 vouchers at $9 each for scholastic players to join/renew USCF memberships, a substantial saving for many parents and coaches.  With the help of tournament directors we intend to offer a limited number of free entries to the Brooklyn Bridge Scholastic Championships and the State Scholastic Championships in Saratoga Springs.

Lofty goals and worthy challenges!  We have a fantastic crew of parents, teachers, coaches and friends who find us and spread the word, helping chess grow while challenging us to listen and respond to the youth of today.

The Right Move at Riverbank #200            November 2, 2014

Attendance: Brother John McManus      Manju Bhargari Bandaru     Henry J. Scorcia           Vamsee Bandaru     Marilyn C. Scorcia       David Granik      Yvonne M. Scorcia                                     October Meeting Minutes:

Motion to approve the October meeting minutes was made by Vamsee and seconded by Henry.  However the minutes had not not yet been posted on the website. They were later posted under “Building the Future” on November 20, to be approved after review..

Old Business:

  • Henry brought a list of names to to be considered as winners of Scholarships from The Right Move at the Brooklyn Marriott tournament January 11-12 since acceptance is needed to follow up with the players & their families.  Brother John still working on confirmation with Steve Emmitt regarding this possibility as was done last year. Two TD’s give 2 days of work in exchange for free entry to 10 players.  Details as they emerge will be made at the December meeting.
  • Open and U1400 sections have advanced players and once checked in they  will not be re-paired. They will be treated as having paid to play against quality players and must sit and wait 45 minutes for opponent to show up. No shows are charged $5, as at all USCF tournaments. These sections will remain at three rounds.
  • Vouchers to become members of the USCF for a yearly fee of $9.00 serve our Under age 20 players extremely well, saving much money to families . While gathering information and record keeping is quite intense the prospect of selling all 300 by April 2015, seems within reach. To date, 102 vouchers have been sold.
  • There are still many new players who do not understand the limits we can offer as a free tournament.  The USCF membership requirements do not allow expired memberships to play in rated tournaments.  This is one of the reasons for lowing the price to $9 through the voucher program. Players with memberships that are no longer valid are not permitted to play unless they renew membership.
  • Awards – Many thanks to David Granik for assuming responsibility for posting the list of winners prior to announcing the results and awarding the prizes.
    • Open & U1400 will receive a medal if they have 2.0 points (only 3 games).
    • U1000 & U600 will receive a medal or 2.5 points
    • Unrated grades 2-12 will receive a medal for 2.5 points
    • Teams with only 1 player may not receive a team plaque. Teams need 2 players or more to be recognized. Top four scores completes the team score.
    • Tie breaker rule: the more players on a team the higher the team tie-break points
  • Posting of pairings outside the tournament hall needs better planning to allow players space to find out necessary information so they can be properly seated on time for each round.

New Business:

  • Are there any immediate changes in store for the coming year with size of sections?
    • Consensus to leave the groupings as they have been this year, noting that the beginner grade 2-5 section is usually younger players, sometimes even kindergarten and first graders.
  • Website:
    • Seeking a person with availability and competence to volunteer to upgrade sections of our website as well as post pictures to enliven our site.
  • Cake:
    • The grand cake celebrating the beginning of our new era “201” will arrive at the December 7 “Finish Strong” tournament.
  • The 2015 – 2016 scholastic calendar will be announced in January  by Vamsee. We are still in need of five sponsors ($1000) for trophies and medals, as well as new officers to take over in June, 2015.    (October 12 is National Chess Day)
  • Congratulations to Alex Beasley and the staff from the NYC Parks Department for letting us use Riverbank State Park each month. We appreciate all those who have “jumped in” to help as many people set up tables, chairs, sets and equipment to help The Right Move keep “on schedule” to professionally serve FREE CHESS FOR YOUTH.

Great big Thank you to all who volunteered on November 2, 2014:

Old Business:

  • The minutes from the June 8th meeting were approved.
  • There will be a Board of Directors meeting at 4pm to approve the by-laws to be sent to David Goldstein for updated Letter of Incorporation.
  • We need a search committee to begin looking for new board members for the 2015-2016 year.
  • Going forward, at 9:15 check-in ends and every player should be inside the gym. At that time, announcements are made.  After announcements all parents & non-players must leave.
  • Any announcements to be made are sent to Brother John for approval.
  • At 9:30 the Under 1400 Section and the Open Section begin their play.
  • The voucher program so far has worked well.
  • Assignment and committee member lists are kept by Marilyn, our Secretary.

New Business:

  • By January 2015, we have to send out a list of possible tournament dates and try to get any sponsors for the following year.
  • Doug Goldhirsh is still listed as the President of the Board of Directors of The Right Move, but he has not been president since 2010 – 2011. The IRS needs a letter of resignation from Doug.
  • The committee to pick players for the Brooklyn Marriott tournament will be Henry & Marilyn Scorcia and Brother John. Must let parents know that they must drive the players themselves to and from the Marriott.  (Confirmation of 10 entries not yet confirmed by Steve Emmitt.)
  • Motion brought on by Yury Belenky:
    • In the Open Section he would like to go back to 4 rounds instead of 3 rounds. He thinks the time waiting for the opponent to show up is long.
    • He suggests waiting 15 minutes before re-pairing players who do not have an opponent. Giving the player a bye is not fair since everyone comes to play chess.
    • He has spoken to parents of players who play with Chess in the Schools and they don’t bring kids to The Right Move because it is only 3 rounds and lots of waiting around.
  • Resolution of the Motion:
    • Brother John took an informal survey of the players in the Open and Under 1400 Sections and the results were as follows: 17 players in favor of 3 rounds and 13 players in favor of 4 rounds.
    • There will be a house player who will play with anyone who is waiting for their opponent. Once the round starts everyone will start their clocks even those waiting for their opponent.  The player who is here can play with the house player until their opponent shows up.  Vote taken and unanimously passed.
    • There will be 3 rounds for Under 1400 and Open Sections. [Henry Scorcia will look into a Chess in the Schools Tournament and report back as to how they accommodate the higher sections.  Vote taken and unanimously passed.  (update – A review online of the CIS Tournaments for Oct 4 & 13 show the Open section is NOT 4 games but in fact 3 Rounds, Time Control: G/40;d5 ]

Any opponent whose opponent has not shown up will wait for their full 45 minutes.  There will be no re-pairing of players.  Vote taken and unanimously passed.

New Business for November Meeting:

  • How do volunteers contact The Right Move to do volunteering work?
  • How do we train the new volunteers?              -Submitted by Marilyn C. Scorcia

  • Program for Blitz and Bughouse Chess cancelled at this time due to lack of follow-up in  planning / preparation.
  • The Board of Directors’ Officers for NYC have generously donated serving a second year and will be installed in June for the 2014 – 2015 year.  President: Vamsee Bandaru, etc. see above. Alex Beasley will continue to serve on our Board.

                                      April 7, 2014

Attendance:  Brother John McManus Alex Beasley   Vamsee Bandaru   Henry Scorcia   Marilyn Scorcia  Yvonne Scorcia

Additional gratuitous staff (volunteers): Seetaram Bhandar, Harish Daboley, Badri Doraiswamy.

  1. Attempting to accomodate players, beginning in May 2014 late on-site registration (clearly not allowed to play round 1, see rules) may be given $2.00 fine exemption, when possible.
  2. Plans for a fun fund-raiser day “Blitz, Bughouse and Outdoor Fresh Air Chess” have not progressed. Awaiting report from Sam and Alex for next step.
  3. A review of the staggered times for starting rounds shows attendance down drastically since the changes began in January.  Postings and accuracy have been made much easier for the tournament staff and access to players (noise) has not been much of a problem.  Elliot Weiss objected to not being able to make announcements and generally opposes the staggered schedule. Feedback from the many players is good.  May and June will continue with the staggered schedule.
  4. Contributions for April, 2014: $26. This brings the total from January – April 2014 to $112.  (Expenses listed at $200 per tournament. Actual is much higher.) Dificit $678.  Sponsors necessary to help Brother John pay these expenses.  There is no other source of income!
  5. The early check-in program will continue, even though many players have used this and not yet paid their fine.  The fines are clearly indicated “$5.00 fine if checked in” on the website under the currently signed in list. Brother John will be approaching players on that list asking them to meet their obligation of fairness to the opponent when  skipping a posted game.
  6. Change in next year’s projected schedule: Easter Sunday, April 5, 2015  tournament moved back one week to April 12.-Submitted by Marilyn C. Scorcia

Nov. 3, 2013 The Right Move 192 at Riverbank State Park

Attendance: Brother John McManus, Alex Beasley, Henry Scorcia, Marilyn Scorcia, Alex Beltre, Oscar Santana, Vamsee Bandaru

  1. Our Mailchimp NYC list now totals 16.  It would make communication much easier if the 350 or more families concerned would sign up for our e-mail through mailchimp.
  2. Contributions for November. totaled $205. The Matching Gift offer from Brother John of $1000 extends through the end of December.  Thanks to all who have helped so far.
  3. Number of $200 sponsors for NYC = 0. We are looking for big donors to ensure The Right Move beyond this, our 25th year.
  4. Alex Beltre helped coordinate a drive wherein 10 Scholarships to the Jan 12 tournament at the Marriot in Brooklyn and 10 Scholarships to the NYS Scholastic Championships in Saratoga Springs will be presented to deserving players.
  5. The establishment of a $300 fund for winners of the unrated section to receive memberships is still unresolved.
  6. Our 501 (c) 3 status is in process of being updated as Marily Aceto, Fred Goldhirsch’s secretary since 1990, has stepped down. She is to be commended for her fine support and help all these past 23 years.
  7. Henry Scorcia and helpers  are  to be commended for the Check-In list procedures instituted.  Truly great work, and much appreciated.  Needs to be continued.
  8. Questions remain about the Advance Check-in procedure and the large number of absent seats (Marithon Day, NYC).   Collection of donations at desk recommended for those listed.
  9. After late ten minutes section TD may re-assign empty seats for pairings but penalty for those not showing up remain. Those signed up with no opponent receive full point byes.
  10. March 2 tournament conflicted with NYS Scholastic State Championships in Saratoga (March 1-2, 2014) so the website now indicates our TRM tournament will be on March 9, 2014 and the change is accepted.
