THE RIGHT MOVE Chess Foundation

The Right Move Chess Foundation, Inc., is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit corporation which serves scholastic chess players in  New York City and the Greater Capital District of Albany, New York by providing a series of free chess tournaments during the school year.  

MISSION STATEMENT:

To Advance Life Skills Training in Youth Through Chess Mastery and Parental and Educational Involvement

PURPOSE:

The Right Move promotes serious and continuous growth of youth using Chess as an educational tool

through a series of free monthly competitions, for various skill levels, at Riverbank State Park and Roberto Clemente State Park, NYC.

Chess mastery is achieved using best methods of study and participation and the engagement of parents and educators.

Groups and individuals are recognized for their achievement on a monthly  basis at the awards ceremony concluding each tournament.

Rules  for The Right Move Chess, New York City Area: Updated March 20, 2019

1 Chess Tournaments

A. There will be a series of 9 free monthly chess tournaments for scholastic players from October through June, usually occurring on the first Sunday of the month. Top rated players will play four games at game/35; delay 10 seconds, with games at 9:30, 11:00,  12:30 and 2:00. Other sections will play four games at game/30, delay 5 seconds. Regular games are scheduled for 10:00, 11:15, 12:30 and 1:45 with Awards at 3:00. The unrated sections, Awe, for Grades 8-12 with Adults welcome, Grades 4-7 and Grades 2-3 will play four games at game/25; delay 0 seconds with  same time schedule. Please note:

B. Trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers in each section except Awe.  Only scholastic players may receive trophies.   Established Tie-break rules (Median, Solkoff, Cumulative) will determine how to break ties of players with an equal number of points (wins).

C. Medals will be awarded to all those with 2.5 points.

D. The top two teams in each of the five sections will receive a Certificate suitable for framing. Teams are composed of four or more players in each section. A minimum of two players must compete in that section to be eligible. The top four players’ scores from that section are combined to compose the team score. 2. Leadership

A. From 2004-2010 all work and funding for The Right Move was provided by Fred Goldhirsch. In May 2010 Fred Goldhirsch died, and the major source of revenue ended. Since 2010, funding has been accomplished through public donations, which are tax deductible. Some corporations have been able to provide matching grants.  Sponsorship of one tournament costs $200.

B. Beginning in 2013 a team consisting of President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer , along with Public Relations and Internet Technology Coordinator (IT),committed to adding their services to ensure the future of The Right Move. Brother John McManus and Eliot Weiss serve as Chief Operating Officer (CEO) and Financial advisor (CFO), overseeing all aspects of The Right Move on a monthly basis.

The Board of Directors for NYC for 2018-2019 consists of: President- Renee M Scorcia, Vice President- Yvonee M Scorcia, Secretary- Marilyn Scorcia.

The Board of Directors for the Albany region for 20182019 consists of: President- Mary Anne Sorrentino.

The President shall lead the monthly meetings and meet with sponsors who provide funding to enable the program to continue.
The Vice President shall stand in for the President when necessary, and assist where possible, especially  lining up qualified candidates for future leadership roles for The Right Move.

The Secretary shall assure that accurate and complete minutes are kept and transparent to all. Minutes shall be placed on the Web..
The Treasurer shall check that all financial transactions are correct, and reported in a timely manner. TRM (NYC) and MTRM (Albany) are both reviewed by the treasurer.
A Public Relations Office shall see that all reports for newspapers and TV, etc., are presented correctly and without prejudice or harm to any person or group.
Our IT Coordinator will maintain our website as a friendly resource for parents, youth and coaches, inviting and informing about both past and upcoming persons and events.

C. The schedule for election of officers provides for nomination of officers (team of officers, slate) to be prepared for next year by March of each scholastic year. Voting would take place in May and the new term of office begins on June 1 (to be ready to serve the first tournament in October.)

D. The yearly schedule of event calls for the calendar for next year to be tentatively ready by February. Contact Brother John, webmaster, for updates.
